Liverpool are reportedly monitoring PSV Eindhoven midfielder Paul Wanner, according to German football expert Christian Falk, as the Reds weigh up options to strengthen their creative midfield.
Who Is Paul Wanner?
The 20-year-old began his youth career at SV Amtzell before progressing through Bayern Munich’s academy, which he joined at just 12 years old. After making his senior debut in 2022, Wanner struggled for regular game time and was loaned out twice to gain experience. He completed a permanent move to the Eredivisie last year and has since won a league title at Philips Stadion, while also establishing himself in the Austria national team setup.
Why Liverpool Are Interested
Falk, writing on the FC Bayern Insider website, claims Liverpool have been impressed by Wanner’s rapid development and have registered their interest. However, with his PSV contract running until 2030, the midfielder is fully focused on his development under Peter Bosz and has ambitions of becoming the Eredivisie’s top midfielder.
Valued at around £19m by Transfermarkt, the left-footed playmaker stands at 6ft 1in and operates comfortably in both the number 10 and box-to-box roles. His passing range and eye for a final ball have made him one of the Eredivisie’s most exciting young talents.
A Long-Term Wirtz Alternative?
Since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen, Florian Wirtz has held down Liverpool’s creative midfield spot but has yet to hit top form in the Premier League. Dominik Szoboszlai offers cover but has largely been deployed deeper by Andoni Iraola this season, leaving a question mark over long-term depth in that position.
Whether Liverpool move for Wanner in January or wait until next summer remains to be seen, but the interest suggests Anfield’s recruitment team are already planning ahead.
