Football Insider claims the Wales international sees himself as a “victim” of Farke’s tactics. The head coach has settled on a back three, leaving little room for a traditional winger.
That switch came midway through last season, when Leeds looked at risk of a relegation scrap. Results improved and they finished comfortably in mid-table, so Farke has understandably stuck with it.
The change has hurt several Championship promotion heroes, James included. He amassed more than 2,600 league minutes in 2024/25, but that fell to roughly 550 in the Premier League last term.
Harry Wilson Adds to the Competition
Leeds reportedly signed fellow Welshman Harry Wilson on a free transfer this summer, squeezing James further. Wilson is more naturally an inside forward, a role that suits Farke’s blueprint better than James’s out-and-out winger profile.

At 28, James is contracted until 2029, which strengthens Leeds’ bargaining position. Any suitor would probably need to pay a considerable fee, and the club were reluctant to sell him earlier this year.
Even so, the report suggests he wants regular starts rather than a role from the bench, and that could shift the mood behind the scenes should Leeds refuse offers.
Our Opinion on the James Situation
Personally, I think both sides could benefit from a frank conversation at this stage of his career. James still offers genuine pace, useful against deep-lying defences, but with Wilson ahead of him the minutes may not come. A loan or reasonably priced sale could suit everyone, although Leeds will be wary of thinning their depth midseason.
