Spurs Monitor Dutch Talent Amid Midfield Rethink
Tottenham Hotspur have entered the chase to sign Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiël, according to TEAMtalk, joining a crowded field of Premier League suitors.
Roberto De Zerbi overhauled his midfield options in the summer, bringing in Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for significant fees after Spurs scraped Premier League survival on the final day last season. Yves Bissouma and Pape Matarr Sarr were both allowed to depart, leaving Tonali, Fernandes, Rodrigo Bentancur, Conor Gallagher, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray as the club’s central options.
However, Fernandes has struggled to hit the ground running, while Gray has been deployed at right-back to cover for the injured Pedro Porro. With Tottenham propping up the Premier League table on just two points from five matches, and already dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Liverpool, reinforcements look increasingly necessary.
Chelsea Lead Race for Zechiël
Tottenham are far from alone in their pursuit. Liverpool, Brighton and Hove Albion, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest have all been credited with interest, while Chelsea are understood to hold the strongest position after missing out on Lamine Camara following Enzo Fernández’s departure. The Blues are also weighing up Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton as an alternative.
Feyenoord, though, are reportedly reluctant to sell, with Zechiël tied to a contract running until 2028 and valued at roughly £9million by Transfermarkt.
A versatile operator capable of playing box-to-box or as a deep-lying playmaker, the 22-year-old enjoyed a breakout loan spell at Utrecht last season before returning to De Kuip, and has continued to impress with nine goal involvements in seven Eredivisie appearances this term.
Personally, given Tottenham’s toothless start and Fernandes’ inconsistency, Zechiël’s energy and creative range look tailor-made for the Premier League — the concern is whether Spurs can realistically outmuscle Chelsea for his signature.
