Liverpool have thrown their hat into the ring for former academy graduate Tyler Morton, with Crystal Palace and Everton also chasing the 23-year-old’s signature ahead of the January window, according to TEAMtalk.
The English midfielder has been a standout performer for Lyon this term, helping Paulo Fonseca’s side climb to second in Ligue 1, just behind league leaders Monaco. Remarkably, no player at the French club has clocked more minutes than Morton across their opening ten competitive fixtures, a clear sign of how central he has become to Fonseca’s plans.
Standing at 6ft 1in, the Wallasey-born talent has grown into one of Ligue 1’s most reliable defensive midfielders since leaving Anfield last year in a deal worth an initial £10 million, rising to £15 million, with Liverpool also inserting a 20 per cent sell-on clause. He has gone on to make 53 appearances for the club, chipping in with three goals and three assists.
Why Liverpool Could Move for Morton
Liverpool’s renewed interest makes sense on paper. Curtis Jones was never replaced last summer, and question marks still hang over Alexis Mac Allister, whom PSG are reportedly monitoring. Bringing Morton back would hand Andoni Iraola a ready-made, defensively astute option in a position that could soon need cover.
Competition Heats Up for January
Palace, meanwhile, may view Morton as an eventual successor to Adam Wharton, who continues to draw admiring glances from Europe’s elite. Everton’s interest is slightly more curious given they’ve already brought in Christian Norgaard and Hayden Hackney this year, though James Garner’s future remains uncertain, which could open the door for Morton as a long-term option in that engine room.
Personally, I’d be surprised if Lyon sanction a sale in January — Morton is far too integral to Fonseca’s system right now, and losing him mid-season would be a significant blow to their European ambitions. A summer move feels far more realistic, and Liverpool’s sell-on clause means they’ll be watching closely either way.
