Man Utd Target Crystal Palace Striker Mateta in January

Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a January move for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to TEAMtalk, with the Frenchman said to be eager to make the switch.

Why Man Utd Want a New Centre-Forward

United’s specialist striker options are currently limited to Benjamin Sesko and Joshua Zirkzee. Zirkzee has found life in the Premier League difficult since arriving from Bologna two years ago, while Sesko, who showed promising flashes last season, has been hampered by fitness problems this term.

Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo can operate through the middle if required, though both are happier out wide. TEAMtalk suggests the club intend to cash in on Zirkzee next year and want a replacement lined up.

Mateta’s Contract Situation Could Open the Door

The 29-year-old’s deal at Selhurst Park expires at the end of the season, which could make a winter deal more affordable. The report claims United have long admired him, and that his representatives have already made contact over a potential transfer.

Saudi Arabian clubs are also said to be monitoring the situation, but Mateta reportedly prefers a move to Old Trafford. Transfermarkt values the forward at around £26m.

What Mateta Would Bring to Old Trafford

Standing 6ft 4in, Mateta is a right-footed striker who is physically imposing, dominant in the air and effective at holding up the ball. He also presses diligently without possession and is a composed finisher.

During his time in south London, he has lifted the Conference League, FA Cup and Community Shield. He has slipped down the pecking order this season, partly due to injury, but his Premier League goalscoring record speaks for itself.

Our Take

At 29, Mateta is in his prime, and his contract situation makes him an appealing short-term and potentially long-term option. His aerial strength would give Ruben Amorim’s side a different dimension in attack, and he would offer reliable competition for Sesko.

The real question is timing. United could pounce in January or wait to snap him up on a free in the summer, which would be the shrewder financial play. Waiting carries risk, though, given the interest from Saudi Arabia.
