Joe Willock Contract: Newcastle United Plan Crunch Talks as Besiktas Wait to Pounce

Newcastle United are set to sit down with Joe Willock and his representatives to discuss his future, with Besiktas still monitoring the midfielder, according to Football Insider.

Willock’s Newcastle Revival Under Jaissle

The 27-year-old has rebuilt his standing at St. James’ Park this season and is now a key part of Matthias Jaissle’s plans. He has netted three times in seven appearances, including the opener in the 2-1 win over Hull before the international break.

That upturn explains why Newcastle held firm in the summer, turning down two bids from the Turkish side. The second was reportedly worth around £17million. With Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali having departed, the Magpies felt they could not afford to lose another midfielder. Willock arrived from Arsenal in 2021 for £20million.

Contract Situation Raises the Stakes

Willock’s deal expires next June, so he will be able to agree a pre-contract with Besiktas from January for a free move in the summer of 2027. The Turkish club therefore have every reason to wait. Newcastle must decide whether to open extension talks or risk losing him for nothing.

Newcastle Eye Midfield Back-Up

The club are also exploring midfield options, with Lyon’s Tyler Morton, 23, on their radar, although Liverpool are reportedly watching him too. That does not necessarily signal Willock is heading out; it looks more like sensible contingency planning.

Our Take on Willock’s Situation

Selling for £17million a few months ago would have looked sound business given his contract. Now that he is scoring and bringing energy, the calculation has changed. If Willock wants to stay, a new deal deserves serious thought. If he prefers Besiktas, Newcastle should at least look to avoid losing him on a free. The coming talks could define whether this is a genuine second chapter or a short-lived revival.
