Arsenal Transfer News: Gunners Eye Monza Striker Gustavo Varela as Napoli Join the Race

Arsenal and Napoli Chase Portuguese Forward

Arsenal have reportedly started working on a deal for Monza striker Gustavo Varela, but Napoli are also in the hunt. Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web claims the 21-year-old is on the radar of Napoli, who want to add a centre-forward next year. Several Premier League clubs are also said to have made early moves. Benfica will profit from any sale, as they hold a 20 per cent sell-on clause from his summer move to Monza.

Who Is Gustavo Varela?

Born in Lisbon, Varela developed in Portugal and Greece before graduating from Benfica’s academy. He made just one 15-minute senior appearance for the Portuguese giants, then spent a loan spell at Gil Vicente before joining Monza this summer. Since arriving in Italy, he has scored nine goals and set up another in nine games, a huge boost for a side battling relegation from Serie A.

Why Arsenal and Napoli Need a Striker

Arsenal are searching for forward options ahead of next year’s two transfer windows, with Viktor Gyokeres reportedly still goalless in ten appearances this term. Napoli boss Massimiliano Allegri, meanwhile, wants competition for Rasmus Hojlund, who has managed only two goals.

Our Take

Varela’s age and early output make him a smart name for Arsenal to monitor, but nine games is a small sample. Benfica’s sell-on clause will push up Monza’s asking price, and a relegation battle could make him easier to prise away. Arsenal’s early move gives them a head start, and Napoli will need to act quickly to catch up.
