Chelsea are reportedly tracking Manchester City centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov as they weigh up defensive reinforcements for the January transfer window, according to Caught Offside.
Khusanov’s Rise To The Premier League
The 22-year-old has enjoyed a rapid rise through the ranks after coming through Bunyodkor’s academy in Uzbekistan. He began his senior career at Belarusian outfit Energetik-BGU in 2022 before impressing enough in the Vysshaya Liga to earn a move to Ligue 1 side RC Lens a year later.
His performances in France caught Manchester City’s eye, and the club moved to sign him last year. Since arriving at the Etihad, however, Khusanov has largely been used as a squad option rather than a guaranteed starter. He has nonetheless picked up domestic cup honours along the way and remains a key figure for Uzbekistan at international level.
Chelsea Weighing Up A Move
Caught Offside suggest Chelsea have identified Khusanov as a potential target after enduring some defensive wobbles early this season. With his game time at City limited, the Blues believe there could be an opportunity to prise him away, though they reportedly face competition from three other Premier League clubs also keeping tabs on him.
Transfermarkt values the defender at around £43million, and with several years still left on his contract, City are under no pressure to let him go cheaply.
Standing at 6ft 1in, Khusanov is comfortable at both right-back and centre-back, offering pace, composure on the ball and solid defensive numbers.
In my view, Khusanov looks a smart long-term option rather than a quick fix — his versatility and athleticism suit the demands of Chelsea’s system well. Whether Enzo Maresca’s side move decisively in January remains to be seen, particularly with rivals also circling for his signature.
