Ruud Nijstad has become one of Europe’s most talked-about young centre-backs, with several elite clubs now tracking his progress at FC Twente.

Chelsea and Manchester United Monitor Teenager
According to TEAMtalk, Chelsea and Manchester United are both watching the 18-year-old, who has become a regular in the Eredivisie. Standing 6ft 3in and left-footed, he is calm on the ball, which suits the modern game.
United need defensive reinforcements with Harry Maguire’s career winding down and Lisandro Martinez’s future uncertain. Chelsea, meanwhile, already have plenty of options at the back, so Nijstad could face a crowded squad.
Barcelona Hold Early Advantage
Barcelona look best placed. Sporting director Deco has reportedly travelled to the Netherlands, and an initial approach was turned down. The Catalans are expected to return, while the player has spoken warmly about joining them. Manchester City, Bayern Munich and several Premier League sides have also been watching.
Twente Determined to Keep Hold
Nijstad penned a deal until 2029 in June, and technical director Erik ten Hag wants to protect his development. A January exit is not anticipated, with Twente preferring to keep him until at least summer 2027.
Our Take
Another season of regular football may suit everyone. It would sharpen Nijstad’s game and probably raise his price, while Barcelona’s possession-based style and the chance to partner Pau Cubarsi give them a compelling pitch. English clubs will have to work hard to change his mind.
