Atletico Madrid lead race for Darwin Nunez

Atletico Madrid have reportedly taken the lead in the race to sign Benfica attacker Darwin Nunez.

The 22-year-old winger has been in sensational form for the Portuguese club during the 2021-22 campaign, netting 26 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.

The Uruguay international still has more than three years left to run on his contract, but he is expected to be on the move during the upcoming transfer window.

The Premier League giants Manchester United continue to be strongly linked with the Uruguayan, who could be available somewhere in the region of £67m.

However, according to Fichajes, Atletico Madrid are at the head of the queue for the forward, with the La Liga champions preparing to replace both Luis Suarez and Joao Felix ahead of next season.

Nunez has contributed 40 goals and 14 assists in 77 appearances for Benfica since arriving from Almeria in September 2020.
