Tottenham Reportedly Regret Will Lankshear Sale as Striker Flourishes at Middlesbrough

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be questioning their decision to sell Will Lankshear after the striker’s prolific start at Middlesbrough, according to Football Insider.

Lankshear Impressing in the Championship

The 21-year-old joined Boro in a £20 million deal this summer, having been judged surplus to requirements following his loan spell at Oxford United. The move looked sensible for a player in need of regular senior football, but few expected such an immediate impact.

Lankshear has scored eight goals in 11 appearances across all competitions, establishing himself as one of the Championship’s most dangerous forwards. Former Spurs scout Mick Brown believes the club will come to regret the sale.

Spurs Struggling for Goals

The timing is awkward for Roberto De Zerbi. Tottenham have scored only twice in five Premier League matches, and neither goal came from a recognised centre-forward. Dominic Solanke is still searching for his first league goal, Richarlison has fallen out of favour and Omar Marmoush is not seen as a natural No.9.

De Zerbi previously insisted he had no regrets over Lankshear’s departure, but that position becomes harder to defend if the problems continue. Spurs are expected to look for a proven striker in January, although finding quality mid-season is notoriously difficult.

Our Take

It is worth remembering that Championship form does not guarantee Premier League success, and judging a sale purely on what happens afterwards is risky. Lankshear must still show he can deliver against tougher defenders.

Even so, Tottenham appear to lack exactly the sort of penalty-box striker he is developing into: someone who occupies defenders, attacks crosses and gets into scoring positions. If Spurs end up spending heavily in January while Lankshear keeps scoring for Boro, this £20 million sale could look like one the club would gladly reverse.
